5 Best Wines to Serve this Christmas 2020

Just like it has been since "Circuit Breaker" Phase 1- there is a limit to who gets a seat at the table this Christmas.  We are all hoping that the number of visitors will be raised from 5 to 8, but that still means a lot of people left out for most families.  The more intimate number has meant more frequent small gatherings and perhaps more meaningful conversations, so we can only be thankful for all that Covid-19 has thrown on us this Year of our Lord 2020.

So regardless of how many people will be gathering at your dinner table this Christmas, there is sure to be some special seasonal food there that can be enhanced by some Christmas wine.

1.  Champagne: L'Esprit de Chapuy Brut Terroir $86.00

Straight from the heart of the Champagne region. Yes, this is no sparkling wine (although honestly those are just as good.  But a rose by a different name ...), a true champagne created with the traditional method and malolactic fermentation, this bottle offers the epitome of effervescence and according to the Chapuy family, will:

"excite the taste buds, shake the certainties, and lead to great moments of pleasure."

2. Château La Louvière 2017 (Unbelievable White) $88.00

If you are serving a seafood spread this Christmas, look no further than this bottle. Hailing from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, this 100% Sauvignon Blanc has an intoxicating bouquet of florals on the very first whiff.  Full-bodied, well-balanced with especially generous white fruit flavours (nectarine) and honeycomb, the complexity of this white is truly unbelievable.  This wine has a beautiful long aftertaste, with hints of vanilla and mango. Goes perfectly with shellfish, sushi, lamb stew, crab stuffed sea urchins, cheese and Asian dishes in general.

3. Pomerol by Clinet 2016 (Red) $82.00

One to share with friends in the near future and;
One to keep for the magic that time will cast on your bottle.

May you live a long life!

Château Clinet is set in the Pomerol wine region where the gravelly clay and iron-rich soil high atop a plateau makes the terroir produce the finest quality grapes in the world.  In your bottle of 95% Merlot & 5% Cabernet Franc are elegant scents of dry red fruits, prune, ripe black cherry and melanosporum truffle. On the palate are fruity, well-balanced cranberries, red currant, fresh plum and hints of hazelnut.

4. Le Seuil de Mazeyres 2012 (Red, Biodynamic)  $75.00

If Covid-19 has a silver lining, it is this: Mother Earth is exceedingly resilient if we only give her the chance.  In this, not only organic, but even more stringent levels of earth-friendliness and sustainability: BIODYNAMIC, is an amazing bottle that will truly give you the terroir of the Pomerol wine region, unadulterated by any chemicals, additives or artificialness.

Let the truth set you free!

5. Cennatoio (Gold) Oro Chianti Classico (Red, Organic) 2015 $66.00

A bottle of friendship between the Italian Alessi's and French Vialard's, raise your glasses to your friends at your dinner table who have become family.

In your bottle of organically grown gold (oro) is a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino, that has been aged in oak barrels for 14 months.  It is a deep ruby red that has a distinct Morello cherry aroma with plum and durmast hints.  Full bodied and thick, it is characterised by a generous tannin which becomes softer over your meal, giving you a finish of cherries and red berries.
