Château Gigognan Clos du Roi Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2015 (White, Organic)
Châteauneuf-du-Pape (New Castle of the Pope) derives its name from the fact that Pope Clement V, former Archbishop of Bordeaux, relocated the papacy to the town of Avignon in 1308 (and stayed there for 70 years). The Papal Tiara with the keys of St. Peter is embossed on the wine bottles from this appellation. When we spoke to the winemakers there, they told us that 10% of the best wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape went to the Catholic Church as an offering in its distant past.
A blend of 45% Roussanne, 32% Grenache Blanc, 18% Clairette and 5% Bourboulenc, this white wine is aged in used, French oak barrels. On the nose, this Clos du Roi Blanc (Walled Vineyard of the King) has aromas of lemon peel, yellow flowers, lemongrass and green apple. Dried vanilla, almond, yellow apple and lemon curd caress the palate. Loooooong persistent finish of lime, stone fruit, and baked stone flavours reward the patient.
We would recommend seafood dishes such as shellfish, sushi and sashimi, but it also goes very well with chicken, pork and veal, as well as Asian cuisine in general. Although, in fact, it is perfect on its own.
Let it breathe for half an hour at a temperature of 10-12c and enjoy!
Note: Only 5% of the wine produced in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is white and made with rare white varietals from old vines whose output has to be kept low. Production at Château Gignon for Clos du Roi Blanc is less than 250 cases per year, 100% Organically farmed certified since 2009.
