Château Gigognan Clos du Roi Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2015 (Red, Organic)
Châteauneuf-du-Pape (New Castle of the Pope) derives its name from the fact that Pope Clement V, former Archbishop of Bordeaux, relocated the papacy to the town of Avignon in 1308 (and stayed there for 70 years). The Papal Tiara with the keys of St. Peter is embossed on the wine bottles from this appellation. When we spoke to the winemakers there, they told us that 10% of the best wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape went to the Catholic Church as an offering in its distant past.
A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah varietals, this red wine is aged in used, French oak barrels. On the nose, this Clos du Roi (Walled Vineyard of the King) has red & black fruits, gentle white pepper and other spices. Notes of vanilla come through with the good use of Oak. Delicate, smooth and very long.
THIS IS A ROCKSTAR WINE!
